FAQs

Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem
  • Room for Therapy is an agency providing one-to-one psychotherapy to clients from their central Edinburgh practice and online. It was started by practicing psychotherapists, Neil Hutchison and Phil Shaw, who wanted the experience of anyone seeking therapy to be more human and empowering.

  • Anyone can find themselves in need of emotional support at any time and we believe that psychotherapy can be part of the solution.

We welcome enquiries from adults (18+) who feel able to commit to weekly therapy sessions in our George Street office or online.

  • Our therapeutic approach is primarily centred on establishing a relationship that is empathic, client-led, and deeply human. This foundation is built on well-established therapeutic principles, drawing from both psychodynamic and person-centered therapy practices.

Psychodynamic therapy is based on the understanding that our current behaviors, feelings, and thoughts are influenced by the unconscious aspects of our minds, which have been shaped throughout our lives, particularly during our early years. In our work together, we will explore how these early patterns may be manifesting in your adult life, often in unhelpful ways.

The person-centered approach, as the name implies, places you, the client, at the core of the therapeutic process. This means that our focus will be on understanding your experiences from your perspective, free from the judgments that can often accompany relationships outside the therapy room. We are committed to creating a space where you feel truly seen and heard.

  • Our standard rate is £70 for a 50-minute session.

  • Get in touch with our therapists directly via the Contact Us page or by email at contact@roomfortherapy.co.uk and we will respond as soon as possible to discuss availability for an initial alignment session.

  • We understand that sometimes circumstances mean that you might need to miss a weekly session. If you need to cancel a session, we kindly ask that you provide as much notice as possible. Please note that cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice will incur the full session fee.

We will provide you with dedicated contact details at the beginning of the therapy engagement and would ask that you use these if you need to get in touch to cancel a session.

We will consider requests to reschedule sessions but will not be able to guarantee that this is possible due to other diary commitments.

  • If you decide to commence work with one of our therapists, then you will be provided with a dedicated email address and phone number for them. This is to provide a channel of communication if you need to cancel or request a rescheduling of your appointment. Unless in exceptional circumstances, your therapist would not be expected to respond to contact outside of the scheduled session time on any other matters.

This is an important boundary to protect the therapist’s other personal and professional commitments but also to maintain the security and consistency of the therapeutic setting, which includes the time boundaries of the session.

There are circumstances in which the therapist and client may agree to deviate from this approach but they would be discussed on an ad-hoc basis.

  • Confidentiality is a fundamental ethical principle in our work, and we are committed to treating any information you share with the highest level of respect and care. However, please be aware that there are certain legal and ethical exceptions, such as situations involving the risk of harm to yourself or others, as well as the need for supervision. You can find further details in our working agreement. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to discuss them with us.

  • In-person sessions take place at our dedicated therapy room on the 2nd floor of 93 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3ES. The room is fully accessible with chairlift and elevator access if required. Online sessions take place via a confidential Teams call which we will send you dial-in details for.

  • While our preference is to work in person, we are happy to work with clients online if they feel this is the best option for them.

  • We hope that you are satisfied with the process of therapy but recognise that, for various reasons, this will not always be the case. In this event, the first course of action should be to discuss any issues arising with your therapist during your sessions or at another mutually agreed time.

If you remain unsatisfied and wish to escalate this further, then you can engage the complaints process of the Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland industry body (“COSCA”).

Further details of COSCA’s complaints policy and procedure, including contact details for complaint submission, are available at
